A couple of questions about maca root

Hi all. I've searched the memories section and found nothing about maca--if I've missed it, please forgive me and link me to the proper pages! :)

I've been going a little nuts re: "superfood" supplements lately, and I've recently discovered maca root. I was pretty excited about this one, as it's supposed to work wonders for regulating hormones (and is considered an "adaptogen," which is good). I have a history of depression, anxiety, a sluggish thyroid, and irregular periods, so this one seemed like a very good choice.

Anyway, I usually like to add my "superfood" supplements to my smoothies. I've added, in the past, things like chia seeds and hemp protein powder to them--both with great success and little "ick" factor. I have a couple of questions about the maca powder:

1. This stuff tastes terrible! It has a horrible, overpowering copper-ish taste. Does anyone have any suggestions re: how to hide it in my food, or do I really have to dump a whole container onto a counter and stuff it into capsules (which would suck)? I guess you only need 1/2 to one teaspoon to get benefits, but even that tiny amount is...ugh. It RUINS an otherwise delicious smoothie.

2. Am I being crazy, or does this stuff work right away? I've noticed a change in my mood that was almost immediate...and I didn't notice these changes after adding other supplements. I feel decidedly calmer. Have any of you also noticed these effects? I'm wondering if this is just a placebo effect.

(I should add, for a bit of background, that I'm a moderately high mileage runner (35-40 miles per week), if that makes any difference.)

Thanks in advance! :)

Changing the world!

I apologise in advance if this isn't an appropriate post.

At times it can feel overwhelming, but every simple change does make a difference to the world :)

How do you believe you're making a difference?

♥ I purchase and support natural/organic beauty products & have managed to convince my fiance to make the change! "Did you know that 64% of the chemicals in your products are absorbed into your body?" has scared him terribly :)

♥ I have my own organic herb garden.

♥ We both have our own aluminium water bottles & try to avoid purchasing plastic bottles.

♥ I'm attempting to make my own cleaning products; especially dishwashing liquid & laundry soaps.

♥ I'm aware & actively seek new opportunites whenever I can.

Also, where needs improvement?

× I would love to be able to purchase more organic food, however I simply can't afford everything just yet - everything is so much more expensive in Australia. I will try to visit a farmers market though.

× I use too many paper towels. Need to get myself more organised & have recycled tshirts available instead!

× Wasting water; ugh :(

I'm almost too nervous to ask since the entire basis for this community rests on this question but how do I live in a harmonious stable-state with the ecosystem? I don't eat meat or drive but I just feel there's got to be some kind of definitive "guide to not living like a parasite", I just really want to live as a producer and not a leech- or at least have a symbiotic relationship with the world. Can people recommend any books/sites/etc... or even just personally suggest anything?

missing period

First time post here. I've checked the memories, but nothing seems to fit.

My period has been missing for upwards of two-plus months now. I've taken multiple pregnancy tests, all of which come up negative, as suspected. I am showing no physical signs of bodily changes that would indicate pregnancy. Although it is possible as my significant other and I have slipped up in the past when it comes to protection. I have not been on any HBC pills in close to 2 years, have had no significant changes in diet or exercise regimen.

The only thing I can think of is stress levels. My Boyfriend and I have been in roller coaster mode these past few months. My dog was pregnant (just gave birth to 8 beautiful babies). We've gained and lost roommates. I'm barely making ends meet.. etc.

Also: This same pattern occurred in the cycle that should have happened before my most recent period, which may indicate that one of my ovaries is out of commission. Is this a likely scenario? What could be the cause of that?

If the advice is to go see a doctor: I know! I just don't really have funds at the moment. What is it costing me to continue to put it off?

Any help is much appreciated.

I do not think that word means what you think it means.

From my current proofreading project:

Signal boosting: Bath & Bodyworks Boycott

A Sacramento Connecticut manager for Bath & Bodyworks fired an employee for being Wiccan. The manager called in the employee to question her scheduled vacation time, and the employee stated that she had taken Samhein off every year for six years, and that the vacation had been approved almost a year earlier. When asked why this particular week, she disclosed that she was Wiccan. According to the article:

Her manager replied, “that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard, let me ask you where your priorities should have been?” Uberti asked what was so ridiculous and was told, “Well, you will need a new career in your new year” and “I will be damned if I have a devil-worshipper on my team.” Uberti was fired shortly after the phone call.

This kind of discrimination is unacceptable. Don't buy from B&BW and let them know why.

Wanted - Recommendations: Custom furniture/woodworking

I'm trying to build a custom cabinet to hold a TV and my media equipment. It needs to fit into a narrow space, with walls that are difficult to sink anchors into so none of the options I've seen in furniture stores have worked for me. After many weeks of shopping, I have concluded I need to talk to someone who can do some custom work for me.

I have a mocked-up design (thank you Google Sketchup) and dimensions, although I'm prepared for my design to be re-evaluated based on reality and cost and probably even the basic principles of cabinetry. I know it's not going to be IKEA-cheap, because I want it to be better than IKEA-sturdy, but budget is obviously an important consideration.

Is there anyone in Toronto my fellow community-members would recommend who could handle this sort of project? (Have you had something built by them yourself? Review?) Bonus points if they have a website or a storefront with open-hours that extend outside of the standard 9-5 weekday.

Faerie Blood is super-cheap on Fictionwise today

It seems that Fictionwise is having themselves an Indie publisher sale this week. All MultiFormat (read: DRM-free and downloadable in any format you want) books are 30 percent off!

And since Drollerie is a MultiFormat publisher on Fictionwise, that means, ladies and gents, that you could pick up Faerie Blood from that site for a cool $4.14.

If you pick it up TODAY, there’s even a coupon that runs until tomorrow, FANTASYNOW, which will knock 25 percent off any Fantasy novels! So you could get a total of 55 percent off of Faerie Blood that way!

Sharing this because, y’know, I care. ;)

Green Tea staining teeth?

I drink about 4 cups a day at work. I love it and am not going to stop drinking it, but I have heard that it can stain your teeth. Has anyone experienced staining of the teeth with prolonged drinking of tea? Is there something I can do to prevent it? I know this stuff stains my coffee mug, but a little salt take even the worst of stains away so I feel like just brushing my teeth would handle business also.

ACV + Body Odor

Hi everyone! I know some of you take apple cider vinegar and I was wondering if you noticed if it gave you body odor?

I told my mom I wanted to try taking ACV to help my eczema, but she told me had tried taking some a long time ago (just for health, she doesn't have eczema) and noticed it gave her horrible body odor. I said I would take at the most a tablespoon a day, and she thinks she probably had less than that.

I just wanted to know if anyone here had similar experiences before I started taking it.

Donating stuff

Is there any organization or group that would benefit from old (mostly) Chatelaine magazines?
I feel bad just recycling them and wanted to see if anyone knows where they can be of use.
Also, I have an assortment of ballpoint pens, crayola washable markers & mr. sketch smelly markers that I also probably don't need, if you know where those would be of use.
Thanks!
